Why Choose the UK

The UK, made up of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales is a thriving island nation with a booming economy. With an impeccably high standard of living, free healthcare, paid holidays and substantial earnings, it is of little surprise that it attracts thousands of immigrants from across the globe.

For those that wish to improve or learn the English language, there is no better opportunity than to immerse themselves amongst like-minds in a bustling environment where job opportunities are aplenty.

There are certain processes that must be followed in order to begin working in the UK. If there is an offer of work and requirements are suitable met, a worker can relocate within just a few months from the time of application.

What is a work permit

A work permit must be acquired before a foreign worker can undertake work within the UK. Though somewhat restrictive in its process, it is a thorough strategy to ensure that workers are both suitable for a role and will continue to thrive. Once you have been assigned a work permit, your opportunities for personal growth are endless.

The permit is suitable for highly-skilled workers that can add value to the growth of the UK. There are different visas depending on your country of origin, your reason for coming to the UK, the duration of the stay and your skills and experience.

Popular jobs in the UK

The UK is constantly growing and much of this is due to an influx of skilled foreign workers. In-demand professions vary but common industries that seek candidates include Healthcare and Nursing, Engineering, Accounting and Finance, Information Technology and construction trades. With the ever-expanding rise in technology, it is expected that this sector will continue to seek talented, skilled workers for the foreseeable future.

Language

Foreign workers must demonstrate that they can fully communicate in English as part of the application process. This is usually achieved by passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) or providing evidence of an obtained degree-level qualification that was taught in the English language.

It is in everyone’s interest to learn to speak English. English-speaking individuals are often at a greater advantage than their counterparts due to their ability to communicate freely. Learning to speak English is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, and immersing yourself in an English-speaking environment is the most efficient way of achieving this.

Processing Timeline

It is likely that you will receive a decision within three weeks of submitting your application. This can be lengthier if you have overlooked documents or provided insufficient information. For this reason, we advise that you seek professional assistance to ensure that your application is expedited.

Other required information includes:

  • A valid passport
  • Your certificate or sponsorship number
  • Results of an English language test
  • Details such as your job title, occupation code and current salary
  • Bank statements to demonstrate financial stability for the duration of your stay in the UK
  • Proof of your relationship to other applicants (if applicable)
  • Results of a Tuberculosis test (if applicable)
  • A criminal record certificate (this is only necessary for particular occupations such as Healthcare, Social Care and teaching sectors)

Impact of Brexit

Staff shortages and a lack of HGV drivers has prompted the implementation of a new streamlined points-based system for immigration. Much of the aforementioned process remains in place, though the new online strategy enables checks to be completed more efficiently and rapidly without the need for physical document checks. Furthermore, the job you are offered must be at a required skill-level of RQF3 or above which is equivalent to a UK A-Level. You will also need to be paid a relevant salary threshold by your employer – a professional will advise you on the associated salary requirements.

New additions include a requirement to qualify for a score of 70-points. A skilled-job offer from a UK employer and an ability to speak English will score 50 points. A further 20-points can be achieved by securing a salary of at least £25,600 per annum.

Further points can be acquired for higher-education qualifications or a job-offer where known shortages apply.

Processing times remain at around three weeks though a fast-tracked scheme applies to doctors, nurses and other healthcare positions.

The permit is divided into three tiers

  • A Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa can be applied for if you have been endorsed as a recognised leader within your field of work. This includes science, humanities, engineering, medicine, technology or arts.
  • A Tier 1 Visa is suitable for those that have permission to remain within the UK. An existing visa can be upgraded to this status.
  • A Skilled Worker Visa (previously known as Tier 2 General Visa) can be applied for if you have been offered a job within the UK. You will require a certificate of sponsorship from your employer before you are able to travel. This is the most common Visa and the one that you are likely to require.
