The English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most commonly utilised test for those that are looking to migrate or study overseas. Since its introduction in 1989, IELTS preparation has become one of the most trusted forms of English assessment.

As a leading assessment that is recognised globally by over 8000 universities, employers and immigration professionals, it provides a fair and accurate assessment of an individuals English-language proficiency.

Four key sections are assessed in the test; speaking, writing, listening and reading, with content based on common every-day situations. The simplistic and generic nature of the test ensures that it remains fair and unbiased to all backgrounds and cultures.

IELTS is evaluated using a 1-9 scoring system. An individual’s ability is scored accordingly with the highest score equating to the most efficient.

Scores required for entry into colleges or universities will vary based on their personal requirements. When researching institutions, they will often state the IELTS score that is required.

There are two key areas that IELTS is required; study and work in an English-speaking country. We have outlined the necessities for IELTS in both categories.

Study

Students that are hoping to remain in an English-speaking country for work are required to demonstrate an excellent knowledge of the language. This will open doors for future possibilities and show commitment to their study or practice. Many English-speaking universities now require students to undertake IELTS as a condition of their acceptance. It will not only get you on the course, but it will also offer you the best chance of success with your studies.

There are two types of test; Academic IELTS and General Training. The IELTS Academic test is ideal for those planning to study in an English-speaking environment or at a university. General Training is applied to below-degree level.

If you are hoping to obtain a job or career in an English-speaking country, you will be required to demonstrate your ability to speak the language as part of your application. Each country has its own requirements in terms of IELTS scoring; the UK requests a minimum score of 6.5, for example, and different industries and occupations have their own requirements too.

In order to work, study or relocate to Canada, candidates must undertake the IELTS General Training test to demonstrate their level of proficiency to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Immigration laws state that a working knowledge of English is essential though scoring will vary dependent upon your chosen institution. This can range from 5.5/6 for an undergraduate course, to 6.5/7 for a postgraduate course. All Canadian universities and colleges accept IELTS, alongside professional associations that require minimum scores for registration purposes.
